God Keeps His Promises!
61Devotion by Solly Ozrovech
"Because of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the Lord. "I will protect them from those who malign them," (Psalm 12:5)
People's lives are threatened by all kinds of dangers and calamities. Sickness can attack; natural disasters happen regularly: floods, tsunamis, earthquakes and fires. Road accidents have become everyday occurrences; crime and violence increase daily; there are political uprisings; terrorists and hijackers; and wars. Human error can sometimes result in fatal situations.
But we cannot live in constant fear of these things - neither is it necessary for us to do so. Of course we must take every necessary precaution, but above all we should be seeking the protection of God. King David wrote the psalm on which we are meditating today, and he knew all about danger.
It seems that he lived in constant fear of his life. But he also knew danger born from lies and groundless boasting of arrogant people. The tongue can be just as deadly as the sword. We need to be protected from the braggarts who think that they can rule the world through propaganda and misinformation.
The only way in which we can know peace of mind and calmness in similar circumstances is through the surety of God's protection; by living in Him through faith and trusting Him at all times. Jesuswas able to sleep while a storm was raging around Him because He had entrusted His life to His Father. He could meet the enemy when they took Him captive because, before they came, He had wrestled with God in prayer. H could trust Himself to the Father when He was hanging on the cross because He could look beyond the fear of death to the glory of eternal life.
"God's promises are like the stars; the darker the night, the brighter they shine." David Nicholus
